I am Sam Sheckells, a designer from Baltimore, Maryland. I’m passionate about ergonomics, intuitive design, and exploring the tangible interactions that people have with products.
I am a Master of Arts graduate from the Design Products program at the Royal College of Art in London, the top-ranked art and design university in the world. Studying at the RCA allowed me to develop my design thinking and process, steering my interests towards human-centered design and giving me the tools to be a confident and capable designer. I earned my bachelors from the University of Maryland College Park, majoring in studio art with a specialization in digital media. While there, I explored outside my major by immersing myself in numerous design and engineering-based projects. Through my studies, I also gained experience in fabrication, programming and sound design.
I also have valuable work and extracurricular experience. In 2019, as well as during high school, I worked for Sheckells & Sons Construction, a concrete construction outfit. Through this, I became comfortable working with heavy power tools and equipment while also learning valuable teamwork skills. During my summer holidays from 2014 to 2018 I worked at CDI Corporation, a government security and marine engineering firm, doing work ranging from CAD Design, to fabrication, to in-field testing. From 2015 to 2016, I participated in Micro-G NExT, a design project with NASA, to design new hand tools for astronauts exploring asteroids.
Along with my experience in design and engineering, I have held a myriad of other hobbies and interests. I raced motocross for ten years when I was younger, participating at Loretta Lynn's Amateur Nationals along with winning some other district championships. During high school, I switched to karting for a few years, earning two World Karting Association national championship titles. Racing and competing taught me a lot about sportsmanship and pushing myself to the limit, along with some valuable mechanical skills. I'm also an active musician, having played in the band The Mild Animals during my time at the University of Maryland, as well as writing my own music under my own name.
