Milan Design Week 2019

How might we successfully represent the Royal College of Art at Milan Design Week, the world's largest design fair?

2019

The Royal College of Art’s Design Products programme exhibited at BASE Milano during Milan Design Week 2019.

The Salone del Mobile Milano, a furniture show held outside of Milan, Italy is the largest furniture trade fair in the world. Inside Milan during the same time, the city is taken over by major companies and design studios as Milan Design Week.

In 2019, the Royal College of Art’s Design Products Programme participated in an exhibition for Milan Design Week as part of Ventura Future at BASE in the wildly popular Tortona district of the city. Design Week is an opportunity for the College to show one of its most popular programmes to over 90,000 international members of the design community.

While tutors provided guidance throughout the process, the student team of around eight individuals was responsible for the curation, design, construction and staffing of the exhibition. This included graphical identity, exhibition layout, installation and deinstallation, budget management, administration, hiring contractors and more.

As part of the project management team, I made sure that the project was going smoothly, both internally with the exhibiting students as well as liasing with external parties. I was responsible for ensuring that deadlines were being met, all parties were communicating effectively and important tasks were being completed. The exhibition proved to be a success for the programme, boosting its online presence and allowing tens of thousands of industry, press and public visitors to witness the rich learning environment of the Royal College of Art.
